While working on the charcoal series, I vacationed in pastel. I hit on the idea of crushing the chalks and rubbing the powder into the same Lenox paper with stomps of soft tissue (Charmin, to be precise). This method brings out the luminosity of the grain of the paper in a similar but inverse way to the effect of the charcoals – the darker color lies in the troughs of the paper grain while the bare crests create the sense of light.
